“Dental care is often neglected due to a lack of access to affordable services,” said Kohlmeyer. “Studies show that 25 percent of adults aged 35 to 44 have untreated dental cavities. When these issues are not addressed early, they can become serious and may require emergency treatment. A 2023 survey from the Dubuque County Community Health Assessment & Health Improvement Plan revealed that 18.75 percent of uninsured residents reported difficulties in accessing dental care.”

The clinic not only serves as a vital resource for the community but also provides valuable learning opportunities for students in the dental assisting program. The clinic allows students to gain hands-on experience by working with patients alongside licensed volunteer dentists and dental hygienists from the community. Students diligently work to develop their skills all while helping the patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their appointments.
